Notes on the Japanese locale
Because there were no standards for Japanese locale components at the time of definition (1993),
the Japanese locale definition here has several disagreement with the current standards.
The following is an incomplete list of such disagreements.
- The UCS Reference Map (ja_JP.reference-map) included in the Japanese locale is different from the official standard, JIS X 0208:1997.
(The standard mapping between JIS X 0208 and UCS is first published in JIS X 0221:1995. Note that this file predates the standard.)
For mapping between eucJP and UCS, refer to the TOG/JVC definition (local copy).
- The LC_COLLATE definition is not aligned with JIS X 4061:1996 Collation of Japanese string. (Note that this locale definition predates the standard.)
- The character classes defined in LC_CTYPE definition are not consistent with JIS X 4061:1996
(again, for the historical reason).
